At Agile Monkey, we are committed to being able to bring high quality Pilates instruction to the Santa Cruz community. We offer specialized group classes in Reformer, Mat, Springboard, Chair, Arc, ball and props to meet the needs of our diverse population.

Reformer

 

The Pilates Reformer is an extraordinary piece of exercise equipment allowing resistance and support for exercises involving every part of the body. Our Reformer classes will challenge you to develop core and extremity strength, stability, flexibility, coordination and balance. The wide range of exercises provides a stimulating workout for clients at any level of ability. The small class size ensures personal attention and guidance to keep you safe, focused and appropriately challenged.

 

Please note that all of our Reformer classes will be organized at the discretion of the instructor and interest of the clients, and may utilize some time on the mat or other equipment to ensure the best class experience.

 

Class Capacity: 5 Students.

 

 

Mat & Props

 

Pilates Mat is the foundation for the entire methodology, which aims to create a balance of strength and flexibility in the body. Pilates challenges your mind and strengthens you from the inside out, enabling you to perform complex movements safely, with power and grace. The foundation of the Pilates Mat repertoire builds from fundamental exercises that help you to learn the underlying concepts and movement principles. You will learn things like how to do a proper upper abdominal curl without straining your neck, and how to stabilize your pelvis so that you can protect your back while working out. As the client progresses, the exercises become more complex, challenging them to use their accumulated knowledge to advance safely through the levels.

 

Props are often incorporated into classes to add fun, release work, balance challenges, refinement of movement patterns, a little help or some extra resistance into the classes. Props may include rollers, balls, therabands, ultra fit circles and more.

 

Class Capacity: 12 Students.

 

 

Springboard

 

The wall mounted Springboards are a great way to get a total body workout utilizing springs based resistance (which can make exercises more achievable and also more challenging, depending on the circumstance and level of the class). The Springboard repertoire was originally modified from the original Cadillac exercises, but has been expanded to include familiar favorites from the Mat and Reformer, as well as a lot of exercises you can’t do anywhere else. Most Springboard classes also include some Mat and & Props repertoire for flow.

 

Class Capacity: 8 Students.  

 


CLASS LEVELS & PRECAUTIONS

We offer small classes with the goal of meeting the needs of each student in class, however please note that group classes are most suitable for clients who can work at a faster pace and do not have injuries or conditions that severely limit their participation. Classes are perfect for those that enjoy the support of fellow students while working out.

 

If you are new to Pilates and/or Agile Monkey, we recommend starting with an Introductory Private Session to address your needs, goals, and possible limitations so that you can get the most out of your experience at Agile Monkey.

 

Please note that the traditional Pilates repertoire typically involves a lot of spinal flexion, which is contraindicated for people with osteoporosis, disc issues as well as other injuries. Please contact us if you have questions about the appropriateness of the class you are interested in. 

 

Beginning - No experience required. Pilates Principles and beginning level exercises will be the focus. A great place to start for all students new to Pilates. Clients with serious injuries or limitations, should first take with an Introductory Private Session and/or seek the advice of an Agile Monkey instructor before taking class.

 

Beginning/Intermediate - Some Pilates experience strongly recommended. Beginning and Intermediate level exercises will be the focus (with any necessary modifications). Clients with serious injuries or limitations, should first take with an Introductory Private Session and/or seek the advice of an Agile Monkey instructor before taking class.

 

Intermediate - Pilates experience required. Intermediate level exercises will be the focus (with any necessary modifications). These classes are aimed at experienced clients who understand the beginning level concepts and exercises, and also have a good understanding of their own injuries/limitations and know how to modify accordingly.

 

Intermediate/Advanced - Pilates experience required. Int/Adv level exercises will be the focus and the pace will be faster, assuming skilled participants without injury or serious physical limitations.

 

Advanced - Pilates experience required. Advanced level exercises will be the focus and the pace will be fast. Only for skilled participants with extensive knowledge of the Pilates repertoire who are not suffering from injury or serious physical limitations.

 

Super Advanced / Instructors Only – These classes are intended for instructors and dedicated Pilates practitioners who perform at that level. Please request permission before registering.
