Beginning/Intermediate - Springboard, Mat & Props

This class is taught by:

Susie Durant

Certified Instructor

Susie’s approach to Pilates comes from a background in ballet, modern dance, yoga, fascial release work, with the ultimate goals of pursuing healthy, mindful living and graceful aging. Susie received her BA in Dance from UC Irvine, taught ballet to children and adults, and studied yoga. Moving from the dance world, she became a recreational athlete, exploring fitness through soccer, running, rafting and hiking - and raising a family. She discovered Pilates 15 years ago while addressing joint issues, and found the practice to be the very best form of mindful movement, providing both physical and mental well-being. Convinced that Pilates is a technique that is accessible to everyone, she began a long term personal practice and exploration of Pilates and complementary mindful approaches, with a plan to teach. She has completed the PhysicalMind and Stott Pilates instructor programs, and taught group classes in the Sacramento area for eight years. After retirement from a desk job, she moved to Santa Cruz two years ago, and discovered Agile Monkey. Its high quality, supportive environment and excellent instructors inspired her to participate in the Balanced Body instructor training program to further develop her teaching. She is thrilled to be a part of such an outstanding Pilates studio and hopes to provide support to those who want to keep moving!

Dixie Mills

Senior Certified Pilates Instructor.

Dixie Mills has been teaching Pilates for more than twenty years. In 1993 Dixie became certified through the Pilates Center of Boulder, while pursuing an MFA in Dance Performance & Choreography from the University of Colorado. After graduating from both CU and The Pilates Center, Dixie got a chance to teach some of the healthiest and most athletic people in the country. The following year she moved to Seattle where she got a chance to stretch her rehab skills teaching at a studio near Microsoft. Dixie also worked with many teenagers in the Seattle area on building strength and coordination to support their sports or dancing pursuits (how wonderful to have the alignment, strength, flexibility, and connectedness that Pilates brings when you are young—please consider sessions for your teenager or college student!).

After 5 years of teaching clients, Dixie relocated to New York City, where she developed several continuing education workshops for Pilates teachers. She has since taught in Connecticut, New Jersey, Long Island, Philadelphia, Seattle, Virginia and Hawaii. Known as a teacher’s teacher, Dixie has great eyes for seeing the body’s quirks, and great hands and words for explaining how to reach your best potential.

Rose Nolen

Certified Instructor

Rose has always loved to move. As a child she danced around the house until her parents finally decided dance lessons were in order. She studied ballet and modern dance, and then earned her BA in dance education from the University of Maryland. Upon graduating she performed professionally and then started her own dance company. She began studying Pilates to help with back pain, and over time appreciated the physical benefits as well as the mindful approach to movement.

While raising a family, Rose earned a California Multiple Subject Teaching Credential, and as she started to teach in the classroom she integrated creative movement and Pilates. She became convinced that Pilates was an incredibly flexible and powerful technique that served a wide range of physical needs from adults to children, as well as athletes and an aging population with varying abilities.

In 2008 Rose completed her comprehensive Pilates training with Rael Isacowitz and BASI Pilates, and then studied Polestar Pilates and Therapilates with an emphasis on osteoporosis. Rose began teaching adult classes shortly thereafter and hasn’t stopped since. After retiring from teaching third grade, Rose moved to Aptos and began studying at Agile Monkey to continue her own practice. She was thrilled to find a knowledgeable, caring community of gifted teachers who inspired her to participate in the Balanced Body instructor training program. She feels certain that her Pilates practice has helped her to continue moving and dancing with joy, and is excited at the prospect of sharing her love of movement with others.
The wall mounted springboards are a great way to get a total body workout utilizing springs based resistance (which can make exercises more achievable and also more challenging, depending on the circumstance and level of the class). The springboard repertoire was originally modified from the original Cadillac exercises, but has been expanded to include familiar favorites from the Mat and Reformer, as well as a lot of exercises you can’t do anywhere else. Most Springboard classes also include some Mat and & Props repertoire for flow.

Beginning/Intermediate - some Pilates experience strongly recommended. Beginning and Intermediate level exercises will be the focus (with any necessary modifications).
