Karen is a teacher, healer and lifelong learner. She uses a holistic approach to her teaching addressing the body mind, and spirit. When you train with Karen, her nurturing personality supports personal growth and empowerment. She educates you to understand how to take care of your own body to eliminate faulty movement patterns that could lead to pain or injury.

Karen has been teaching Pilates for fifteen years, and is certified by two internationally renowned programs: the Physical Mind Institute as well as Body Arts & Science International (BASI). In addition, she has extensive training working with clients with Scoliosis. One of her long time clients (ten years) has seen dramatic results and shared this testimonial: “After a session with Karen I stand taller and straighter, and my body is noticeably more balanced. I am free of discomfort and walk away feeling better about the way I look and feel! I will never stop working with Karen.

 

Karen is equally comfortable teaching a full range of fitness levels from athletic to rehab oriented. She has been able to help her clients with back, neck, shoulder, knee, hip and foot issues, and is experienced working with clients who have Osteoporosis, Scoliosis, MS, Parkinson's disease, and Spinal Stenosis. Her greatest joy comes from showing people how Pilates relates to their daily life helping to eliminate pain, and create strong flexible bodies. Rose Nolen

Certified Instructor
 
Rose has always loved to move. As a child she danced around the house until her parents finally decided dance lessons were in order. She studied ballet and modern dance, and then earned her BA in dance education from the University of Maryland. Upon graduating she performed professionally and then started her own dance company. She began studying Pilates to help with back pain, and over time appreciated the physical benefits as well as the mindful approach to movement.
 
While raising a family, Rose earned a California Multiple Subject Teaching Credential, and as she started to teach in the classroom she integrated creative movement and Pilates. She became convinced that Pilates was an incredibly flexible and powerful technique that served a wide range of physical needs from adults to children, as well as athletes and an aging population with varying abilities.
 
In 2008 Rose completed her comprehensive Pilates training with Rael Isacowitz and BASI Pilates, and then studied Polestar Pilates and Therapilates with an emphasis on osteoporosis. Rose began teaching adult classes shortly thereafter and hasn’t stopped since. After retiring from teaching third grade, Rose moved to Aptos and began studying at Agile Monkey to continue her own practice. She was thrilled to find a knowledgeable, caring community of gifted teachers who inspired her to participate in the Balanced Body instructor training program. She feels certain that her Pilates practice has helped her to continue moving and dancing with joy, and is excited at the prospect of sharing her love of movement with others.

Ky Carnell-Russell

Senior Certified Pilates Instructor, Balanced Body Pilates Master Instructor, Anatomy in 3D Instructor

Ky Carnell-Russell is a senior certified Pilates instructor with advanced training and years of experience in Pilates-based rehabilitation. She worked as a Pilates-based rehabilitation specialist at the world-renowned St. Francis Hospital’s Center for Sports and Dance Medicine for several years. Ky co-owned and directed a thriving Pilates studio in San Francisco for four years, and is excited to have relocated to beautiful Santa Cruz, and to be teaching at Agile Monkey.

Ky is a faculty member of Balanced Body and co-teaches the instructor training program at Agile Monkey, as well as teaching Anatomy in Three Dimensions locally and across the US. She is also faculty for the Center for Women's Fitness Pre/Post Natal Pilates Specialist Training. Ky recently received her Master’s degree in Kinesiology at San Jose State University.

Ky is devoted to helping her clients experience ease and joy in movement, as well as feeling the personal satisfaction that arises from progressing and excelling in a challenging physical activity. She loves teaching Pilates to clients in all stages of life and well-being, and includes elements from her background in rehab, fitness, anatomy, and dance into her sessions and teacher training workshops. Ky has had successful experiences working with clients with practically any injury or chronic pain condition and truly believes that Pilates has something to offer everyone.

Barb Imhoff

Certified Pilates Instructor.  

Barb Imhoff is an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner and Certified Pilates Instructor at Agile Monkey. She has been an avid Pilates practitioner at Agile Monkey since 2009, where she fell in love with the practice while working with Ky Carnell-Russell. Having Ky as her mentor has motivated her to pursue a second career as a Balanced Body Pilates Instructor.

Barb comes with a background in competitive bodybuilding and ballet, as well as Spanish Classical Flamenco (she was a dance company member for the Patri Nader Dances of Spain from 1988-1992). Her fascination for the mind-body connection and how Pilates has made a long-lasting improvement in her mental and physical well being has kept her craving for more. For Barb, "Pilates is my sanctuary, a place to leave my busy life at the door, to take a deep cleansing breath, focus and ground myself into the practice of the ultimate movement principles of Joseph Pilates". Observing the exceptional group of talented Agile Monkey Pilates instructors is also a motivating factor towards taking the next step of becoming a Pilates instructor. Barb's over 20 years of nursing experience, her hands on ability to care and nurture for others and how that relates closely to teaching Pilates has led her to pursue her Pilates Certification with Balanced Body, which she attained in 2015.

Barb's passions are her love for music and dance, physical activity, her family, her granddaughters, and her LOVE of Pilates at Agile Monkey.


Jeannette Normington

Senior Certified Pilates Instructor & CoreAlign Instructor.  

Jeannette Normington enjoyed an 18 year career as a professional dancer, touring the world performing in production shows. Pilates was instrumental in helping Jeannette prolong her dance career. Her certifications include, mat work at UNLV in 2001, Comprehensive Pilates training through Body Arts & Science International in 2003, Pre/Post-Natal at The Center for Women’s Fitness in 2006 and Core Align 1, 2 in 2008. Jeannette interned at the Keith Kleven Institute of Physical Therapy & Rehabilitation for Sports and Dance. To deepen her work, Jeannette is currently a part of a one-year mentorship program, “Passing the Torch” offered by Balanced Body, with master teacher, Tom McCook. Jeannette is passionate about sharing the benefits of Pilates for post-rehabilitation, athletic performance and quality of life - for clients and professionals alike.

A native to Santa Cruz, Jeannette is excited to share Pilates and contribute to creating wellness within her home community. In 2008, Jeannette opened her own business, Seascape Pilates where she offers quality instruction and diversity into her workouts combining BASI, Stott and Polestar methods. Jeannette is an avid sportswoman, also trained in tap, jazz, ballet, and yoga, lately enjoying Tai Chi and Qi Gong. She is dedicated to helping people of all ages achieve their maximum fitness potential and making people feel well cared for. Jeannette is honored to join the Monkey team, having always enjoyed Agile Monkey as a friendly, professional, and supportive studio.

The Pilates Reformer is an extraordinary piece of exercise equipment allowing resistance and support for exercises involving every part of the body. Our Reformer classes will challenge you to develop core and extremity strength, stability, flexibility, coordination and balance. The wide range of exercises provides a stimulating workout for clients at any level of ability.

Please note that all of our Reformer classes will organized at the discretion of the instructor and interest of the clients, and may utilize some time on the mat or other equipment (Tower, Chair, Barrels, etc) to ensure the best class experience.

Intermediate/Advanced - Pilates Reformer experience required. Int/Adv level exercises will be the focus and the pace will be faster, assuming skilled participants without injury or serious physical limitations.
