Karen is a teacher, healer and lifelong learner. She uses a holistic approach to her teaching addressing the body mind, and spirit. When you train with Karen, her nurturing personality supports personal growth and empowerment. She educates you to understand how to take care of your own body to eliminate faulty movement patterns that could lead to pain or injury.

Karen has been teaching Pilates for fifteen years, and is certified by two internationally renowned programs: the Physical Mind Institute as well as Body Arts & Science International (BASI). In addition, she has extensive training working with clients with Scoliosis. One of her long time clients (ten years) has seen dramatic results and shared this testimonial: “After a session with Karen I stand taller and straighter, and my body is noticeably more balanced. I am free of discomfort and walk away feeling better about the way I look and feel! I will never stop working with Karen.

 

Karen is equally comfortable teaching a full range of fitness levels from athletic to rehab oriented. She has been able to help her clients with back, neck, shoulder, knee, hip and foot issues, and is experienced working with clients who have Osteoporosis, Scoliosis, MS, Parkinson's disease, and Spinal Stenosis. Her greatest joy comes from showing people how Pilates relates to their daily life helping to eliminate pain, and create strong flexible bodies. Jeannette Normington

Senior Certified Pilates Instructor & CoreAlign Instructor.  

Jeannette Normington enjoyed an 18 year career as a professional dancer, touring the world performing in production shows. Pilates was instrumental in helping Jeannette prolong her dance career. Her certifications include, mat work at UNLV in 2001, Comprehensive Pilates training through Body Arts & Science International in 2003, Pre/Post-Natal at The Center for Women’s Fitness in 2006 and Core Align 1, 2 in 2008. Jeannette interned at the Keith Kleven Institute of Physical Therapy & Rehabilitation for Sports and Dance. To deepen her work, Jeannette is currently a part of a one-year mentorship program, “Passing the Torch” offered by Balanced Body, with master teacher, Tom McCook. Jeannette is passionate about sharing the benefits of Pilates for post-rehabilitation, athletic performance and quality of life - for clients and professionals alike.

A native to Santa Cruz, Jeannette is excited to share Pilates and contribute to creating wellness within her home community. In 2008, Jeannette opened her own business, Seascape Pilates where she offers quality instruction and diversity into her workouts combining BASI, Stott and Polestar methods. Jeannette is an avid sportswoman, also trained in tap, jazz, ballet, and yoga, lately enjoying Tai Chi and Qi Gong. She is dedicated to helping people of all ages achieve their maximum fitness potential and making people feel well cared for. Jeannette is honored to join the Monkey team, having always enjoyed Agile Monkey as a friendly, professional, and supportive studio.

Dixie Mills

Senior Certified Pilates Instructor.  

Dixie Mills has been teaching Pilates for more than twenty years. In 1993 Dixie became certified through the Pilates Center of Boulder, while pursuing an MFA in Dance Performance & Choreography from the University of Colorado. After graduating from both CU and The Pilates Center, Dixie got a chance to teach some of the healthiest and most athletic people in the country. The following year she moved to Seattle where she got a chance to stretch her rehab skills teaching at a studio near Microsoft. Dixie also worked with many teenagers in the Seattle area on building strength and coordination to support their sports or dancing pursuits (how wonderful to have the alignment, strength, flexibility, and connectedness that Pilates brings when you are young—please consider sessions for your teenager or college student!).

After 5 years of teaching clients, Dixie relocated to New York City, where she developed several continuing education workshops for Pilates teachers. She has since taught in Connecticut, New Jersey, Long Island, Philadelphia, Seattle, Virginia and Hawaii. Known as a teacher’s teacher, Dixie has great eyes for seeing the body’s quirks, and great hands and words for explaining how to reach your best potential.

Avra Pirkle

Senior Certified Pilates Instructor, CoreAlign Instructor & Scoliosis Specialist  

 

Avra is extremely enthusiastic about teaching Pilates because her clients experience tremendous benefits in fitness as well as a pain-free lifestyle. She is devoted to helping people reach their goals and aspirations through an individualized training program and specific exercises to maximize recovery from pain and injury.

 

Her Reformer classes are unique because of her caring, personal attention, and because they are fun, creative, fresh, energetic and interesting through using Reformers and other studio equipment as well as 10-15 minutes of mat core work (with props). This format is especially important for clients that take her classes several times a week, year after year after year. Her Active Agers Reformer class incorporates training for clients with osteoporosis/osteopenia.

 

Avra has personally felt the changes in her fitness, health and dancing. She discovered Pilates after a hip injury which had kept her in pain on and off for years; there was even a time that she was immobile in bed for three days. But Pilates has brought relief from all this and has kept her free of pain for many years. She is also a passionate competitive ballroom dancer competing in International Latin with her teacher. Avra has struggled in the past with her dancing because that hip injury made her body compensate in ways that were detrimental to her balance, coordination, core, flexibility and strength. She has been very motivated to find solutions to her issues (resulting also in solutions for her clients) especially since her teacher is one of the top dancers/coaches in the world and is very demanding. When they compete together (going all over the United States), he expects her to rise up to his level since they are judged together as a couple. Talk about pressure! Thankfully, Pilates really helped resulting in better form and freer dancing.

 

Certified by both BBU and PMA, Avra's extensive Pilates training includes specialized training in shoulder/neck issues, low back/knee/foot pain, postural alignment, scoliosis, osteoporosis, and pre- & post-natal care as well as CoreAlign. On top of her competition experience, she has a considerable background in yoga and various other forms of dance. She also has a master's degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison where she used to teach.

The Pilates Reformer is an extraordinary piece of exercise equipment allowing resistance and support for exercises involving every part of the body. Our Reformer classes will challenge you to develop core and extremity strength, stability, flexibility, coordination and balance. The wide range of exercises provides a stimulating workout for clients at any level of ability.

Please note that all of our Reformer classes will organized at the discretion of the instructor and interest of the clients, and may utilize some time on the mat or other equipment (Tower, Chair, Barrels, etc) to ensure the best class experience.


Intermediate - Pilates Reformer experience required. Intermediate level exercises will be the focus (with any necessary modifications). These classes are aimed at experienced clients who understand the beginning level concepts and exercises, and also have a good understanding of their own injuries/limitations and know how to modify accordingly.
